Bugs, Bugs and more bugs!
APHIS (Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service) and Platte County Weed & Pest visited the
Wyoming Child & Family Development-Wheatland and Guernsey Child Development Center and Guernsey Elementary students to learn about and play with bugs.
APHIS gave a very informative presentation to the kids on the parts of an insect. A grasshopper was shown side by side to a spider for comparison. There were a lot of volunteers pointing out the similarities and differences.
Then we went to the hands-on portion of fun.
Tables were set up with several display cases for the kids to see a variety of crawling and flying bugs, another table had several plastic bugs to play with. The star attractions were the live mealworms and the Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches that the kids were allowed to handle. For some kids this was a lot of fun, for a couple kids…it was more fun to look at the displays or play with the plastic critters.
The best part of the visit was when the kids were asked “What was your favorite part, “What did you like best.”.
Answers…The bugs in the boxes. The not real bugs to play with. The ones with all the legs. The big ones that crawl.
